why can illegal immigrants receive public assistance when legal permanent residents cannot?
My husband is becoming a permanent resident, and part of the process includes signing a sponsor with enough income to support the immigrant. In the forms it says the immigrant is not eligible for welfare, and the sponsor is responsible to financially support the immigrant for the next few years. I'm not complaining about this rule (since we weren't planning to use public assistance), but why are illegal immigrants somehow receiving food stamps and other benefits? They're also paying state school fees, while my husband paid international tuition (which put us thousands of $$$ in debt). I'm just confused about the favoritism toward illegal immigrants. Illegal people can't vote, so why is it to the politicians' best interest to promise these things? I'm more liberal myself, but I don't agree with supporting illegal behavior.
Public Comments
- imagine how would you feel or your husband feel, when the illegals get any kinds of amnesty and jump the line straight to the front of the line
- It's because our government is selling out Americans for cheap labor and the cut and run liberal cowards needs the illegals for their votes!
- illegal immigrants do not receive public assistance, by this I mean cash aid, food stamps (EPT), Med Cal, and so on. Just because someone my fit the visual stereo type of an illegal doesn't mean there in the country illegally (many legal forms of entry to) They however recieve emerancy room care and possibley help from community organization or church...
- Because the democrats are courting them for votes by promising them everything they want. In my state, the governor wants to give them in state tuition and make them a protected class giving them more rights than natural born citizens.
- I have no idea myself. Maybe you should ask our wonderful administration. It doesn't make sense at all ,does it? There are other organizations that are asking that question as well like Moveon.org. You should research them and send emails or send letters to your senators & congress asking why.
- They get it through their 'legal' anchor babies.
- The only examples ive ever actually SEEN of illegals recieving such things is when they commit fraud. Do you have any examples where the US gov itself, knowing someone was an illegal alian provided opportunities for someone that they do not provide to their citizens? There is a lot of rummor and hear-say that creates these perceptions. some of it is based on the fact that anyone born on our soil is a citizen from birth. sometimes legal citizens who were born via illegals or visitors are misconstrued as not being citizens to help support anti-immigrant fears. all-in-all i think you should take the time to research any claims you hear about benefits for illegals.
- Because they lie, use false documents, and eligibility workers "look the other way" for a bribe. Just like at home!
- i have never heard of illegals getting such benefits. all they want you to do is sign that waiver so they can make sure you don't become a burden for the government now, because you are now entitled to get the benefits , wereas before you were not.
- Illegal immigrants are not eligible for most types of public assistance in any state in the US. This is a popular myth perpetuated by anti-immigrant groups that want to mobilize people to support their cause. Try finding some hard evidence to support this.
- Because they lie and use fake ID. You don't. Neither do we. Our country apparently thinks lying should be rewarded.
- Some of the people answering this question don't have a clue. Illegals get free education, HUD, food stamps, free medical and other free benefits. You can't ask a person applying for HUD, food stamps or other government assistance if they are here legally. Some of the dummies need to put their brain in gear before putting their mouth in motion or in the case, their fingers in motion.
- What makes you think illegals don't vote? They tried to pass a positive voter ID law in Texas and the Dems defeated it becasue they claim they would lose 7% of their votes.
- The reality of this problem is simply MONEY. For instance a nurse attending to an illegal person could easily ask for a social security card or some state issued ID. But they don't, simply because they manage their budget based on grants. If they recieved 20 million last year serving illegals and they start not attending them this year, their expenses will drop significally, so they will get less money. The same happen with illegals getting GED's, Medicare, School Loans, etc.
